A couple of years ago I mentioned that I have a transcript of Blackmore’s Burial Register kept in the church safe for the period after 1893 (20 October) to 1920. Early Registers are kept in the Essex Record Office (see http://www.blackmorehistory.co.uk/parishregisters.html for more information). Family historians may be interested to know that I now have completed a transcript of the whole Register. If you have an ancestor who you think may be buried in the churchyard of the Priory Church of St Laurence, then you can E mail me or leave a message in the ‘comments’ box below.
The most occurring family names in the Register are: Knight, Maynard, Sutton, Livings, Martin, Pagram, Shuttleworth, Smith, Ovel, Brazier, Riglin, Woollard, Barrett, Blackwell, Baker, Lane, Wood, Wray, Attridge, Conn, Harris, Mann, Mihill, Pond, Speller, Wheal, White, Wiltshire & Wright.
A record of history & heritage: buildings, people & landscape in this corner of Essex.

Margaretting: The Village With A Beautiful Name

Good morning Andrew,
I have communicated with you in the past regarding the Sitch family in Blackmore. I also have family from Margaretting, which I see you do not have a lot about on your website. Have you read the books ‘Margaretting. The village with a beautiful name' by Miss G M Baker? There were three volumes. It was written by my father’s cousin.

Hello Julie
Curiously enough I read this trilogy only recently having bought them from a second-hand bookshop a while ago. Miss Baker was born in Margaretting at the tail end of the nineteenth century and the books were published in the early 1980s when she was a senior citizen. For me her childhood memories (in Volume 2) are particularly striking and should be an encouragement to all to write their memoirs.
Regards
Andrew

High Ongar: Norris Family
Received
12 February 2010
Hi my name is Linda and I am researching my family history.
Through my husband’s family we have quite a connection with Blackmore. My husband’s grandfather Arthur Norris lived in Blackmore and Nine Ashes for a lot of his life. He used to have horses and used to cart goods for a living. I note from the 1910 Electoral Roll that his father George Norris is listed. My mother-in-law was born there: her name was Florence Mary Norris. It is fascinating to know about the voting rules at that time. If you have anything more of interest concerning my family I would love to hear from you. We do have some pictures somewhere of Arthur with his horses. His two sons Fred and Jim worked on farms in the area.
Kind regards

Hello Linda
Norris is a familiar family name in this area, particularly associated with farming. The only entry in the Burial Register, held in the Church Safe, is for an Arthur Henry Norris. I note that the 1881 census has various Norris’ born or living in Blackmore but none are recorded after the turn of the twentieth century apart from George in the 1910 and 1918 electoral register. Norris is not a name that appears on the War memorial either as the fallen of the Great War or the list of those who served. Do I presume your family was in a reserved occupation?
I should mention that Nine Ashes is in the parish of High Ongar and I have not looked up any records for that parish for my response.
If you have a picture of Arthur and his horses which I could use on the website I would delighted to receive a copy. Either way, I trust you are happy to include your message and response on the site.

Hi Andrew
Lovely to hear from you. The Arthur Henry Norris if he died in 1973 is I think the brother of my mother-in-law he was known as Jim and he worked on a farm I think it was in Nine Ashes for the Marriage family. I think near a road junction. His wife was Louie. Opposite the farm at this junction Arthur Norris my husbands grandfather lived and it was sold in the early 1970s and a new house built there I can’t remember the name but I can remember helping my mother and father in law to clear it out. Arthur’s other son Fred worked for the Coop Farm. I believe my sister in law has some photos of Arthur with his horses as she carried on his passion for them in her life and owned horses for a number of years before her favourite one died aged over 30.
My husband’s Grandfather Arthur Norris lived in Nine Ashes up until the early 1970's and he at one time also owned a couple of properties. I believe one of which I think was called Rose Cottage. He is buried at High Ongar church with his wife Amelia Eliza, her maiden name was Jordan and the family originated from Doddinghurst and Kelvedon Hatch.
My mother in law Florence lived in Nine Ashes until her marriage in late 1930s.
With regard to the wartime I do not have any knowledge of that but as my husband’s grandfather carted goods I believe at some stage he used to go to London he might well have been in that category. I will try and obtain a copy of the photo and forward it to you.
Thank you for taking an interest.
Regards Linda

Blackmore: BBC Essex in Blackmore Ten Years Ago
Ten years ago today (on Friday 10 March 2000) BBC Essex broadcast its afternoon show live from the Blackmore Sports and Social Club as part of a series on village life in the county entitled ‘Village Voices’. The radio station talked to many living here – some of whom are no longer with us. Canon Ivy Crawford spoke about the history of the church (as it was known then) and others were interviewed regarding the Village Hall and the social scene. Mention was made of the facilities at the Sports and Social Club and, particularly, the decline in use of the squash courts, which were in 2009 converted into the new Youth Centre. During the live sequence one elderly lifetime resident described the plot land dwellings built in Hook End during the 1930s as “shacks” to the slight indignation of some of the audience present. Her Essex accent was clearly heard across the airwaves. The landlord and landlady of the Leather Bottle were interviewed and the reporter was shown around the local veterinary practice, House and Jackson. Mrs Joan Hobbs, a parish and district councillor for a number of years told her story of the day she received her MBE from The Queen. In the closing sequence the Blackmore Players sang extracts from their recent production ‘Me and My Girl’. The biennial Village Fayre raised £24000 in 1999. Donkey Derby’s were remembered as was the ancient art of wheat whopping. Beer was £1.50 a pint at the Sports and Social Club bar! Some things change. Some things don’t. To listen again to the recording made on cassette tape was an insight into social life ten years ago.

Kelvedon Hatch: Where is Kelvedon Common?
Question to Keldon, History House
13 February 2010
Hello Keldon
Would I be right that Kelvedon Common is the ancient name for Kelvedon Hatch?
Received
13 February 2010
Dear Andrew,
Kelvedon Common is part of Kelvedon Hatch 'KH'. The parish extended from the River Roding at Langford Bridge down to what is now Joy Fooks Chinese Restaurant in the Ongar Road. The southern part of the parish was an area of common land. This was known as Kelvedon Common. The present village was built on that common land. To make things more confusing. The neighbouring parish of Doddinghurst was also on that area of common land and that was called either Kelvedon Common, Doddinghurst Common, or The Common. Doddinghurst parish reached as far as what is now the Shephard PH and the Swan PH in the middle of the present village of Kelvedon Hatch.
I attach a 1777 map. You'll see the windmill which lay just inside KH parish. The present water tower in the village is almost on the same spot. KH lies to the west and north of that. To the right of the dotted line is Doddinghurst.
The boundary was changed in the 1970s and KH took over the part of the old common which lay in Doddinghurst.

Keldon

Blackmore: War Memorial Project (2)
A Project is under way to establish the names and lives of those not only on the War Memorial at Blackmore but also those who died who were connected with Blackmore. All served in the First World War (or Great War as it was known then). There are 21 names who died inscribed on the War Memorial plus a further 81 who served and returned to Essex. The 'Blackmore War Memorial Research Project Group' currently has a list of 44 men who died or were killed being investigated plus the numerous who survived.
An updated list can be found on http://blackmorehistory.blogspot.com/2010/05/blackmore-war-memorial-project-11.html
We would be pleased to hear from anyone who is a descendant of these local heroes.
