Blackmore: A Sparrowhawk on Candlemas Day

For those who feed the birds we must respect the Sparrowhawk, photographed on a day of deep snow (for Essex at any rate) one year ago today. An ancient proverb says:
If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another flight:
If on Candlemas Day it be shower and rain,
Winter is gone and will not come again.
John Ray. English Proverbs. 1670
Taken from 'An Anthology of Essex', 1911
